Winter Zen

Some edges defined,
others quieted by snow.
Winter simplifies.

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss 150mm CF lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back. Two exposures side-by-side stitched with Photoshop.

"...and I'd like to thank the Academy..."

Actor on the stage,
giving life to each layer.
Who are you today?

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss 120mm Makro-Planar CFE lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Scallions

Intricate textures,
gray-green stalks rise gracefully.
An onion growing.

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss 120mm Makro-Planar CFE lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Ladies With Hats

"Warning: When I am an old woman I shall wear purple,
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me."

- Jenny Joseph

Sony RX100 pocket camera.

Squash

The squash was in this bowl for a week, and every day I would pass by it thinking 'That sure is beautiful'. Finally it occurred to me that I should photograph it.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera with 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Cozy Kezar Afternoon

On this first chilly day of fall the air was still, and as my canoe drifted closer to the shore I caught a hint of wood burning.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Old Guard

I was struck by the elegance of this beautiful tree... strong, graceful and still standing guard, displaying its fall colors after so many years.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 35mm lens and Imacon V96C back.

Candy Apple Red

Tart, juicy apple.
Sweet cinnamon aroma.
Crackling candy coat.
(With apologies to Dr. Phelan, my dentist.)

Hasselblad camera, Zeiss 250mm lens and Imacon V96C back.

Spring Spotlight

The day was overcast and sprinkling wet snow when this sunbeam opened onto where I was about to photograph. I made four images, panning vertically and refocusing from bottom to top. The finished print makes me feel like I'm there.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Oh Borscht!

Ice cold beet borscht, sour cream stirred-in, a little sugar, fresh chopped chives, hot summer afternoon. Dee-lish!

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and Imacon V96C back.

Moonrise at the Lake

This was made within a minute of the single image "Lake Moon" further down this column. It is one of the most technically complicated panoramas that I have made.

Nine images with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera and Imacon V96C back. A Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens was used for four square images horizontally, exposing for the sky, and four square images horizontally, exposing for the trees and foreground, and one image with a Rodenstock Grandagon 75mm lens, exposing for the moon. All images were stitched together with Photoshop.

Gold Curtain

Leaves in center stage spotlight.
Snow intermission.
Spectacular second act.

Hasselblad 503CW with Zeiss 150mm CF lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Herrick Cove Lighthouse

Focused on driving, I approached Lake Sunapee as dark clouds formed so rapidly it looked like a movie animation. A column of dust formed in front of me and I slowed down. Wham! A blinding pink-white lightning bolt and a sharp short crack of thunder shook my bones. I thought, "Okay, okay, I got the message... I'll stop and see! "

I parked the car, set up my camera gear, and waited about 15 minutes for this.

Hasselblad ArcBody with Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Simply Elegant

A mix of gentle rain and snow was alternating with warm gusts of earth aromas that engulfed me while I set up my camera. Suddenly, buckshot hail and Arctic wind stung my face and ricocheted off my car with loud pings. Ice was forming on my tripod legs, and rather than risk damage to my camera and lens, I decided this beautiful scene would have to be just a memory, and started to pack-up.

A few seconds later, the hail stopped and the silence was immediate and stunning as drizzle and fog filled the air. It held just long enough for me to reset the camera and capture this one image. I yelled 'Thank you!' to the sky.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Cathedral

Lifted into the sun by 'arms' of these old trees, leaves of green, gold and yellow glowed like stained glass windows.

Hasselblad ArcBody with Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and Imacon V96C back.

Reflections of Fall

Aromas of pine,
Gold, red, yellow, maroon, green.
Reflections of fall.

Two images made with a Canon 40D camera and 24~105mm lens, stitched together with Photoshop.

Soft Light

This was our first full-day tease of spring, when we peel off layers of clothing, and put them all back on, half a dozen times over a half mile walk... blue ice cracking open to the dark pond below as thick fog faintly blushes from the setting sun.

Four images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Early Snow

This one snowfall broke the old record for the entire month of October in New Hampshire, by 20 inches! Spectacular fall colors, dazzling white snow and clean earth-scented air... well worth the inconveniences.

Hasselblad 503CW camera with Zeiss150mm CF lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Recipe for Max

Late afternoon clouds,
Cherry tree in silhouette,
One part Parrish blue.

Sony RX100 pocket camera.

Sunapee Sky

We got it all this day... rain, fog, wind, squalls and even hail in July! But, at the end of the day, we were rewarded with this beautiful sight.

Hasselblad ArcBody with Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Broom

Fascinated by the intricate textures and details of the broom, I photographed it at very close range. You can see that each strand had been alive, growing in a field somewhere under the sun.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Harbor Glow

I was eating in the restaurant across from Newbury Harbor. Half way through my meal, the book I was reading took on a warm tint. I looked up and the room was flooded with the same color. A glance out the big picture windows and I knew I had to capture it. I left everything at the table, ran out the door and pulled my photography gear out of the car just in time. I left a nice tip.

Four images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Winter Moon

My ephemeris said the moon would rise in the middle of the valley on March 26 at 6:45 p.m. I snowshoed with my gear to this perfect spot just in time. The air was spectacular.

Four images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Vivaldi

Gentle wispy rain.
'The Four Seasons' on my mind.
A moment captured.

Two images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Muster Field Moonrise Panorama

It was windy at Muster Field Farm as this October full moon pushed through hazy clouds above Mount Kearsarge. Behind me the sun spread across the horizon, making the field look like a game 'under the lights' was about to start.

Four images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Eggplant

Plump, purple eggplant
sitting on a table, proud.
Soon to be tasty.

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss 120mm Makro-Planar CFE lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Winter Lace

This late February snow was the first major storm of the winter. The humidity and temperature were just right for the snow and ice to stick to branches, but still light enough to snow-blow driveways and paths with ease. Everyone was delighted.

Three images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, PhaseOne IQ-160 back and stitched together with Photoshop.

Composition in Blue and White

It's late Mondrian
and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
It is New London.

Hasselblad Zeiss 503CW with 150mm CF lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Peppers on Black

Little red peppers
all wrinkled and innocent.
Bite one if you dare.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.

Bow to Winter

This late January ice storm reminded us that the second half of winter was still ahead... and the birches bowed.

Four images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back, stitched together with Photoshop.

Neighbor's Farm

My neighbors live in a Civil War era farmhouse and raise "Oreo" cows (Belted Galloways)... black on both ends and a white band around the middle.

Two images made with a shirt pocket Canon PowerShot SD800IS and stitched together with Photoshop.

Muster Field Maples

This is a restored 18th Century historic homestead and working farm.

This was three vertical panoramic images made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, V96C back, and stitched together with Photoshop.

Wadleigh State Park

This park is on the banks of Kezar Lake. Unique in the nation, the New Hampshire state park system is not tax-supported.

Four horizontal panoramic images were made with a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens, V96C back and stitched together with Photoshop.

New Hampshire Summer

This is a demonstration of what can be done with image editing software, and a lot of patience.

Made with a Canon PowerShot SD800IS shirt pocket size camera and modified with Photoshop.

Lake Moon

The moon and earth were closest to each other for the year.

This was one exposure for the trees, one for the sky and one for the moon, all combined with Photoshop CS3. Hardware was a Hasselblad 503CW camera, V96C back, Zeiss 350mm CFE Tele-Superachromat lens with a Teleconverter APO 1.4XE extender.

Snowmobiles on Lake Sunapee

After a late-season freeze-over and first blizzard of the year, snowmobilers enjoy Valentine's Day on Lake Sunapee in 2007.

Camera was a shirt pocket Canon PowerShot SD800IS.

Granite and Moss

This thick, long-fibered moss is nature's shag carpet.

Made with a hand-held Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 35mm lens and Imacon V96C digital back.

Stream of Consciousness

A kindly breeze on a hot July afternoon pushes my canoe silently through space and time.

Sony DSC-T1 shirt pocket camera.

Ring Brook Panorama

Heavy rains made this quiet little brook roar to be heard for a hundred yards.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and Imacon V96C digital back. I made another image with the camera panned a few degrees to the right, and stitched them together with Photoshop.

Lilypads

I discovered that paddling my "tippy" Bell Magic canoe one-handed, while hand-holding a Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 35mm lens and Imacon V96C digital back... wasn't as easy as I had thought.

It Stormed 'til Sunset

Twenty minutes after I got my canoe on the water, the sky filled with clouds and it poured heavily for about 20 minutes... then stopped completely for 20 minutes and then poured again... then off and on until the sun set.

Hand-held Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 35mm lens and Imacon V96C digital back.

New Hampshire

This is the first image that I made here, and it still epitomizes rural New Hampshire for me... old and comfortable, but not at all tired.

Olympus 10D camera.

Celadon Flowers

Wildflowers near my house, modified in Photoshop to resemble Chinese celadon glaze on ceramic tile.

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss 150mm CF lens, Fuji 220 Provia film, drum scan to digital, modified with Photoshop.

Ring Brook ROCKS!

About two weeks after I made "Ring Brook Panorama" it poured heavily again, and I crossed the road and hiked upstream to this beautiful spot.

Hasselblad ArcBody camera, Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon 45mm lens and Imacon V96C digital back.

Succulent

I don't know what kind of succulent this is, but it looks so comfortable sitting in the corner of this old hand-made wood bowl.

Hasselblad 503CW camera, Zeiss Makro-Planar 120mm CFE lens and PhaseOne IQ-160 back.
